Description

Biophilia is an extraordinary and innovative multimedia exploration of music, nature and technology by the musician Björk. Comprising a suite of original music and interactive, educational artworks and musical artifacts, Biophilia is released as ten in-app experiences that are accessed as you fly through a three-dimensional galaxy that accompanies the album’s theme song Cosmogony. All of the album’s songs are available inside Biophilia as interactive experiences: Crystalline, Virus, Moon, Thunderbolt, Sacrifice, Mutual Core, Hollow, Solstice, and Dark Matter.

Björk has collaborated with artists, designers, scientists, instrument makers, writers and software developers to create an extraordinary multimedia exploration of the universe and its physical forces, processes and structures - of which music is a part. Each in-app experience is inspired by and explores the relationships between musical structures and natural phenomena, from the atomic to the cosmic. You can use Biophilia to make and learn about music, to find out about natural phenomena, or to just enjoy Björk’s music.

Biophilia opens into a three-dimensional galaxy with a compass allowing navigation between the 3-dimensional universe and a two-dimensional track list. Take a closer look by tapping on stars within the constellations and you’ll see that each is an in-app purchase that gives access to the inspired combination of artifacts for each new Björk song: interactive art and games, music notation which can be used to sing along karaoke-style, abstract animations, lyrics, and essays that explore Björk’s inspirations for the track. These artifacts bring together conventional and alternative ways of representing and making music to create an environment for entertainment and learning. Biophilia challenges the way we think about music. Here, for the first time, is a music album that exploits the multimedia capabilities of mobile interactive technologies.

Biophilia was developed by Björk in collaboration with interactive artist and app developer Scott Snibbe, and Björk's longtime design collaborators M/M Paris. The individual apps were created by Luc Barthelet, Drew Berry, Kodama Studios, Stephen Malinowski, Scott Snibbe Studio, John Simon Jr., Touch Press, and Max Weisel.

Features:

• Three-dimensional galactic interface with the song Cosmogony
• Nine song apps available as in-app purchases
• Music scores with karaoke playback
• Abstract song animation
• Lyrics
• Essays
• MIDI out to drive instruments

Once beautiful, no sound.

Ten years ago when my son was about 2, I downloaded this app because I’m a big Bjork fan. This app was amazing and beautiful, visually stunning, amazing and interactive in a way I had never seen before. My son would always play this app, and it proved a great distraction from when mommy was pregnant with his future sister and he would come with me to all the doctors appointments, and I would bring my iPad with me so he could use the Bijork app. I originally downloaded it on an iPad Air that no longer functions today.

I was reminiscing about the app with my husband and thought I’d try downloading it again, even though apparently it had last been updated three years ago. Unfortunately, the sound, which is integral to this app, does not work on my iPhone (I currently have an iPhone 11).

I hope that one day Bijork can bring this back so we can once again enjoy it.

Thank you for all of your amazing music and innovations over the years.

1.4 Update:what special offer for those who paid twice?

1.5 update- what's the point to pre-existing users? We're still ripped off for being early adopters, now another update that does nothing to balance this inequity? What a joke! This update just makes it easier for those who are buying now, & who gives a toss about about who paid nearly twice for the same? Not the developers, that's for sure. Thanks for that! Really cool of you!

Update: this review pertains to the 1.4 update in particular. I have no problems w/ the app other than paying for the 1st 4 songs then paying for the full album. This update mentions some 'special offer' for those early adopters such as myself who basically paid twice for the same thing. I have yet to see anything in the app that refences any 'bonus' and I'm wondering if anyone else has? It's one thing to know I've paid twice for the material, but to later promise a bonus and not come through is kind of like opening a healed wound, then throwing salt in it. Am I missing something? If they're not gonna' give this 'special offer' to early adopters, why bring it up & remind us of how we got burnt in the first place? My rating still stands but I don't understand why the empty promises on top of charging us almost twice?

And I mean gone! So I have one question: on the left under Top In-App Purchases there are 2, 1 for Crystalline and 1 to pre-purchase all. Does anyone know how to pre-purchase all? I've looked all around & haven't found a way yet.

I love bjork

First I bought the cd....well actually first I fell in love with her back in the late 80s when the sugar cubes was on SNL then I bought each of her solo albums as they were released along with singles videos movies bootlegs. I purchased the actual cd first but eventually bought the app a few months ago and definately unlike some of the other reviewers I do not regret it. Like her music I am still learning and hearing something new when I open it up. This is not really something that you can expect to get full satisfaction from on the first couple times you play with it which is a good thing cos what would be the point afterwards. I think it was a great purchase and every time I go on it it takes me to another galaxy as intended.....oh it's also cool as hell if you smokin some good green!
